Karen Baskett
Karen grew up as a competitive figure skater in St. Louis, Missouri. She participated in ballet and jazz classes to enhance her skating performance, but her dance journey truly began in college at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. There she became a member of Canyon Movement Company, co-founded Dakini Movement Company, and taught at ARC Dance Studio. After attending the American Dance Theater workshop at Hofstra University in 2000, she decided to move to New York City. She was accepted into the work-study program at Steps on Broadway and eventually taught classes in Steps’ Youth Program. In 2004 she made the move to Seattle, and from 2005-2009 she was a member of oaklanDrive Dance Company. She is currently on faculty at eXit SPACE school of dance. Karen feels blessed to be doing what she loves most, and hopes to share her enthusiasm for dance with as many people as possible. This is Karen's first season with Redd Legg Dance.
Amy Jo Berto
Amy graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in Modern Dance from Texas Christian University in May of 2006. She is a native of Whidbey Island, Washington, where she received training from Island Dance and was a member of Whidbey Island Dance Theatre. Amy performed as a guest with Peninsula Dance Theatre during a dance tour of France, which included a performance at Disneyland-Paris and the Avignon Festival. While at TCU, she had the opportunity to study and perform works by artists from all over the globe, including Christian von Howard, Andrea Harris, Luis Lara Malvacías, and the late Fernando Bujones. After college, she briefly served as the dance captain and a magician’s assistant in Baltimore, Maryland. She currently teaches at Island Dance and works as a farmhand on Whidbey Island. This is her second season with Redd Legg Dance.
Karena Birk
Karena returns to Redd Legg Dance after obtaining her MFA in Dance from The Ohio State University with a focus on performance, notation, history, and pedagogy. Her early training was at the Cornish Preparatory Program, Richmond Ballet, and the University of Washington. Currently also performing with Catherine Cabeen and Company, she has danced professionally with the Colorado Ballet, Lehua Dance Theatre, ARC Dance, and oaklanDrive Dance Company. She has been privileged to dance works of many choreographers, including Trisha Brown, Anna Sokolow, Antony Tudor, George Balanchine, Fanny Elssler, Wade Madsen, Deborah Wolf, and Hannah Wiley. She currently teaches modern and ballet at Bainbridge Dance Center, and has also taught at Cornish, Dance Fremont, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and The Ohio State University, among others. This is Karena's fifth performing season with Redd Legg Dance.
Stacy Brenner
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Stacy studied jazz, tap, and the Cecchhetti Method. She continued her training at Western Michigan University, adding modern dance and Russian ballet techniques to her repertoire. There she received a number of grants and scholarships, including being named the Department of Dance Presidential Scholar and graduated cum laude with a BFA in Dance. At WMU, Stacy was featured in works by choreographers such as George Balanchine (Stars and Stripes and Who Cares?), Martha Graham (Steps in the Street), and Gus Giordano (Sing Sing Sing). Stacy was an Apprentice with Ballet Concerto in Fort Worth, Texas and a company member of MoreDances Contemporary Dance Company in Michigan. In Seattle, Stacy has performed with Maki Morinoue, Selfick Ng-Simancas, Maika Misumi, oaklanDrive dance company, and Jerboa Dance. She currently works with Marlo Martin, and Quark Contemporary Dance Theatre. Stacy is also a Certified Pilates instructor at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School, eXit SPACE School of Dance, and Bodycenter Studios. This is her seventh season with Redd Legg Dance.
Christina Kennedy
Christina, a Maryland native, began her training with Sally Tierney, studying the Cecchetti Method of Ballet. She has received numerous awards including scholarships from the East Coast Cecchetti Committee and was named a Maryland Distinguished Scholar of the Arts. Christina has performed with the Dance Institute of Washington at the Kennedy Center, under the Artistic Director Fabian Barnes. While earning her BFA in Dance from the University of Maryland--Baltimore County, she performed with the Phoenix Dance Company. Since relocating to Seattle, Christina has been teaching and raising two children, and looks forward to her fourth season with Redd Legg Dance.
Mary Kirkpatrick
Mary received her BFA in Dance from Western Michigan University under the direction of Nina Nelson and special studies with Gretchen Warren. Beginning her formal training in classical ballet, she continued her education in modern and freestyle hip-hop dance with several artists in Chicago, South Carolina, and Baltimore. Since moving to Seattle, Mary has performed with Maki Morinoue, Jerboa Dance, Jessica Jobaris Dance Company, and oaklanDrive Dance Company. She is in her seventh year as a member of Redd Legg Dance.
Mari LaRocca
Mari began her early dance training in the Preparatory Dance Division at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. She attended college at Texas Christian University, graduating with a BFA in Ballet and Modern Dance in 2008. At TCU, she performed in many pieces by faculty and guest artists including Li-Chou Cheng, Susan Douglas Roberts, Peter Kalivas,Christi Weindorf, and Holly Williams. Since moving back to Seattle after graduation, Mari started teaching Pilates and currently teaches at Vitality Pilates. She is excited to be in her fourth season with Redd Legg Dance.
Kim Lusk
Kim is from Bainbridge Island, Washington where she began dancing under the instruction of Susan Thompson at Bainbridge Dance Center. She graduated from Connecticut College in May of 2011 with a Major in Dance and a minor in Anthropology. This is her first season with Redd Legg Dance.
Kaitlin MacGregor McCarthy
Kaitlin grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan where she began her training in modern and ballet before attending Mt Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. During her time in school she performed works by Mark Morris, Jose Limon, Doug Elkins, and many others. In 2009 she graduated summa cum laude in dance performance and choreography. Since arriving in Seattle she has performed with Pablo Cornejo, Christin Lusk, Marlo Martin, Wade Madsen, and Cyrus Khambatta. When she's not dancing she works as a server at Plum Bistro and lives with her husband and cat in Capitol Hill. This is Kaitlin's first season with Redd Legg Dance.
Carla María Negrete Martínez
Carla, originally from Mexico City, began her training with Bettina Ebert Schneider and Sandra Bárcenas under the Royal Academy of Dance ballet program. In December 2011 she will receive her BFA in Dance from Cornish College of the Arts. While in school, she has had the privilege to perform works by choreographers Deborah Wolf, Wade Madsen, and Tim Lynch. Additionally she has performed works by Ohad Naharin, Robert Moses, Alex Ketley, and Christian Burns while at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. In Seattle, she has been fortunate to present her own work at On the Boards and has since become interested in the collaboration between dance and other art forms. Currently she is rehearsing a work by Danny Buraczeski and writing a thesis focused on furthering the development of postmodern dance in Mexico. This is her first season with Redd Legg Dance.
Laura Peterson
Laura received a Bachelors of Art in Dance from the University of Washington and a Master's in Dance Science from Laban in London, UK. Laura has performed with such companies as Lehua Dance Theatre, ARC Dance, and the Seattle Symphony. She has also worked with celebrated choreographers Wade Madsen, Mark J. Kane, Mark Haines, Eva Stone, and Rain Ross. Currently, Laura teaches dance at North Seattle Community College and REACH Eastside Performing Arts, and since 1996 she has been Dance Director of Reach for the Sky July. Laura currently dances for New Vision Dance and is delighted and thankful to be dancing her second season with Redd Legg Dance.
Laura Kay Young
Making her ‘sunny’ Pacific Northwest debut with Redd Legg Dance, Laura Kay Young is excited to attempt dancing without shoes for the first time. After training with Gwinnett Ballet Theatre and Atlanta Ballet, Laura Kay studied at Georgia College & State University while obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with honors. Deciding to make ballet into a career she accepted an apprenticeship with Atlanta Festival Ballet under Nicolas Pacana, where she performed Bagheera in The Jungle Book. Young has now performed professionally for North Atlanta Dance Theatre, Nashville Ballet, and Alabama Ballet and enjoyed performing in major productions such as Romeo and Juliet, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Roger Van Fleteren’s original Messin’ with Mozart, Raymonda, Don Quixote, Serenade, and Diana y Actaeon. In addition to dancing, Laura Kay teaches ballet at Rainier Ballet Academy in Renton, Washington and treasures all the outdoor activities that Seattle offers. This is her first season with Redd Legg Dance
Jenna Eady (Apprentice)
Jenna trained for 15 years at Bainbridge Dance Center, directed by Susan Thompson, where she studied ballet, modern, and jazz techniques. She also co-directed Left of Center, a Bainbridge High School dance club. She performed and choreographed several modern pieces that incorporated movement and multimedia images on stage. Left of Center's projects included creating conceptual dance videos. Jenna has always been a fan of Redd Legg Dance and in the summer of 2011 she was asked to join as an apprentice. It has been an inspiring experience dancing along side those whom she looked up to. Currently a student at Seattle Central Community College, she plans to major in dance next year at a college yet to be chosen.
